Central Has a One-of-a-Kind Opportunity

Central Methodist Church has the sole distinction of hosting the first Father's Day service in the world. Over 101 years ago the church honored its fathers in a small, but meaningful service. Tours of Central's Father's Day Room walk visitors through the history and progression of the now national holiday.

In a world where "fatherly figures" are so desparately needed, perhaps it is time to transition our celebration into a festival. Fairmont can become the destination were great fathering can be celebrated. The event would feature seminars on fathering, games and activities centered around fathering, national speakers, and host annual Father of the Year.

Many of these things are being done and have been done. A tremendous amount of work has laid the foundation for our Father's Day service. Ward Downs, Harold Goff, D.D. Meighen, Dora Grubb, Don Downs, and many others have spent countless hours and efforts to make the Father's Day celebration possible.

We should continue to honor the day and their efforts in an annual community-supported event, and create something that the whole region can be proud of. Let the Festival begin....
